When I was in the army, I would sometimes be asked to relay a message, or take a packet of papers to some office away from the cozy confines of the music hall.
I would enter the building, and the guy behind the desk would say, "State your purpose." Loosely translated into civilian speak, it means, "Why are you here?"
It was always a little bit intimidating, but I would take care of
whatever business needed to be taken care of, then walk back to the hall and get back to practicing my scales and etudes.
It was an interesting life, no doubt about it.
What does this have to do with today?
Well, since being in the podcasting business for nearly ten years, I've encountered a lot of folks who have shows, but need to be asked that same question.
Why are you here?
A lot of folks do it
just because others are doing it, and since they're having such a great time with it, it only stands to reason I'm going to have a great time with it.
But they don't ask basic questions like, am I really meant to do this? I mean, their buddy at the prayer meeting might be having a great time with it because it is aligned with their purpose in life, whereas it is not necessarily with theirs.
So they wind up spending a bunch of money on
equipment, they might even hire a producer like myself to...produce.
And then burn out in 3 months because they just don't have the inner fortitude it takes to get through the inevitable lulls and loneliness that always sets in with something like that.
In other words, they lack the P word.
Purpose. It's one of 4 "P" words that Sana and I wrote down at a local Panera that in our humble opinions make for
a peaceful life and business.
We call it the 4 P's for Peace.
We recorded a podcast about the first two of the four and published it this morning. We realized we'd better quit after only 2 because we ran the risk of being long-winded.
We may have only 3 listeners, but even the most stalwart of supporters have their limits.
