My life has been all flowers, and… Trumpets

This past week I had a interesting exchange with a colleague on a Facebook group for Podcasters that I belong to.
The person was complaining that people were not responding favorably to his invitations to be guests on his podcast. And reading the tone of his words, I thought to myself that if this person is writing his emails with the same vibe that he’s writing his emails to prospective guests of his podcast, it’s not hard to see why he is not getting good results.
He was literally belittling people who’s said no because of things like their baby is being born, they’re getting married, etc. Doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to see that his problem isn’t necessarily with his show, but his personality. But maybe I’m repeating myself.
Other people in the group offered words of encouragement in their comments, but I took a different angle. I directly challenged his attitude and said in so many words that he was giving off negative energy in his post, and if his emails are reading like his Facebook post, people pick up on that negative energy, and without even knowing why, they just know inside that, this person is to be avoided at all costs.
Oh, well, Mr. positivity did not take kindly to my remarks. Predictably, he got defensive, and said something along the lines of, “I’ll bet your life has been nothing but flowers and trumpets.“ I assume he looked at my profile picture which has me holding a trumpet, which is what gave him the notion that I and the trumpet are connected.
But it reminded me of how important is our attitude, and how people pick up on the energy that we’re giving off. Maybe this person has the most powerful message on the planet, but his means of delivery to people that will help make his show worth listening to is less than desirable.
The truth is that for me, finding the right energy, and the right level of said, energy has been probably the most difficult thing I’ve ever done in my professional life. I am not a naturally charismatic person, and so often times what I think is really positive energy and it’s me really bringing it is actually causing people to bring their pillows and take a quick nap while I’m talking.
Just another lesson in the proverbial school of hard knocks that I’ve learned more times than I care to admit.
Bringing the right energy, and the right level of energy to a podcast, or any type of public persona, is something that I am able to speak with authority. I specialize in podcasts, which I why I created the Podcast Artistry™ brand. In addition to world-class production services, I give advice and consultation on how to put your best foot forward.
We’ve taken on a couple new clients lately and still have room for one or two more. If you or someone you know is thinking about using a podcast to build a powerful personal brand, check out what we have to offer.
